Against her better judgement, Lady Tresselian has allowed tennis ace Neville Strange and his wife, Kay, to visit at the same time as Neville's ex-wife, Audrey. Other guests only add to the tension: there's Ted, Kay's ever-present "friend"; Thomas, recently returned from wartime Africa; Mary, Lady Tresselian's frustrated companion; and the mysterious Mr MacWhirter, who Lady Tresselian has recently taken in.
With a group of guests harbouring conflicting desires, Lady Tresselian is already set for an explosive house party and, when old Justice Treves dies suddenly and another member of the party is murdered in bed, the group is thrown into turmoil. It is left to Scotland Yard's Detective Inspector Leach to solve the case.

This is one of those comparatively rare Agatha Christie mysteries that do not feature one of her regular sleuths. But the absence of Poirot, Miss Marple or Tommy and Tuppence makes for a very liberating experience with more time spent probing the intricate workings of a dangerous, pathological mindset. The plot itself initially resembles a typical set-up from the golden age of detective fiction as a brittle old woman invites several people to spend the summer at her seaside home only for murder to pay an unexpected visit. Yet the escalating air of menace (excellently realised here by such actors as Hugh Bonneville, Marcia Warren and Claire Rushbrook) catches the listener off guard and will leave you wishing the Queen of Crime had made such departures more often.
